Interview: Public Figures x Tomorrow's Forecast

Public Figures and Tomorrow's Forecast

Naarm's punk rockers Public Figures and Meanjin's indie heartbreakers Tomorrow's Forecast catch up and chat all things wardrobe, weather and band recommendations ahead of their sets at Against The Grain this weekend. Catch both bands and get the best of both worlds - alternative rock in all its forms, let's make friends, dance and rock out.

Tomorrow's Forecast: Was there a specific moment when you all realised the sound you were looking for as Public Figures?

Public Figures: This is a forever-evolving thing for us to be honest. We are still relatively early in our creative journey as a band and have been experimenting lots with new sounds and sonic worlds as we figure out our sound. But it's usually loud, intense and in your face.

If your band were a weather event, what would you be and why?

Tomorrow's Forecast: Hmm.. we would say a sun shower. The rain represents all the breakups and shitty life stuff we write about. But I think the way we turn it into music makes us see it in a different light, and makes something beautiful. So I think that fits just right.

Isaac is a bit of a gearhead, so he is wondering if there any pieces of gear that really characterise the band?

Public Figures: Nothing too specific, but guitars… guitars are sooo back.

Public Figures: What song is soundtracking the montage of your band's life at the moment?

Tomorrow's Forecast: 'u and me at home again' by Wet Leg. Anything Wet Leg is very TF coded, but we have lowkey been in hibernation the last month, grinding work, uni and writing new stuff. So we are absolutely keen to party and play this weekend!

How do you identify when a song is finished?

Public Figures: That's been a big learning curve as of late. It's so easy to keep adding more and more and then getting lost or losing the essence of the song. Learning when to call it a day has been good.

What's the forecast looking like for Against the Grain this year? Who are you most excited to see?

Tomorrow's Forecast: We are manifesting a SUNNY day for ATG, sick of the rain in Meanjin.

We are all really looking forward to seeing Gut Health; they have such a raw, disjointed yet tight sound that has been inspiring the way we write lately.

The Belair Lip Bombs are all-time faves, and we've been really digging Way Dynamic and Acopia.

Pond will be huge too! Isaac's 16-year-old self would be so hype seeing us on the same lineup as them...so basically the whole lineup.

Something we really love about you guys is your stage personas and look. What does dressing up for performance mean to you?

Public Figures: I think we’re very lucky that expressing ourselves through our wardrobe and live performance is something that comes very naturally to us. It's been really fun to exist in a liberated group that pushes each other to be expressive and free when it comes to performing. Every show seems to bring on new and exciting experiences.

What's an element to your sound that you think is underrated? Or perhaps people miss on first listen?

Tomorrow's Forecast: Maybe the rhythm section on some of our tracks! The bass and drums have a lot of fills and runs sneaked through our songs! Isaac and Rohan know how to hold it down and can get missed hiding at the back of the stage.

Tomorrow's Forecast: Who are some of your current favourite bands/musicians from the Naarm music scene that you would recommend?

Public Figures: Wishlist are the future of pop, Techno666 blew us away at one of our Naarm launches, as well as Punko <33

There's lots of cool stuff coming out of Meanjin at the moment - anyone who you think deserves a special shoutout?

Tomorrow's Forecast: Soooo many, I feel as though Meanjin is really having a moment right now. Special shoutout to 01 Thurman (also playing ATG this weekend), koady has been putting out some sick stuff, and Charlotte Meade is a fave too!

What would your tag team walkout song be if the band fought in a wrestling match?

Public Figures: Could be 'Sabotage' by The Beastie Boys or perhaps 'Pull Up To The Bumper' by Grace Jones

Other than Against The Grain, what's a bucket list festival you wish to play one day?

Tomorrow's Forecast: Glastonbury for sure!!! Festivals have always been our goal, would love our name on the Laneway lineup too one day.
